Qualitative Health Research: ADVANCED module: Appraising qualitative health research

Qualitative health research helps grasp behaviors and practices of patients and populations, combined with the meaning health professionals and stakeholders give to their practices and actions, both are known to underlie and influence health practices.

By giving particular attention to the context of an intervention, qualitative research is particularly effective for evaluating programs and practices in the public health field. It allows to reflect on the broader health care context, with its socio-cultural and historical features.

Objectives

In continuation of the basic module and addressed to (semi) experienced researchers in qualitative research, this advanced module will be based on:

  • The use of common data collection tools and coding analysis process
  • Discussion building and derived theory
  • Quality criteria discussions
  • A focus on grounded theory

Participants will categorize and hierarchize the emerged themes and will be led through the whole analysis process, from classification and contrasting, to the writing of results and discussion of qualitative dissertations and manuscripts.

Learning outcomes: discuss and appraise quality in research protocols and papers; conduct a qualitative study themselves, as well as put emphasis on the importance of the theoretical framework underlying the interpretive process of researchers.

A basic module is also available.
