Disease expenditure tracking in Switzerland – methodology and use cases
Health care spending in Switzerland is high by international standards and has increased persistently over recent decades. Health economic research has examined spending levels and growth in high-income countries through both micro- and macroeconomic perspectives. An alternative approach integrates these two perspectives by mapping the structure and evolution of health care spending by disease, type of service, payer, patient age and sex, and year. This spending decomposition framework relies on multiple data sources and on statistical techniques to integrate these data and address their limitations.
Health care spending decompositions offer a novel and powerful framework for addressing key health economic questions, including the drivers of spending growth and the efficiency of spending in generating health gains. They also provide a basis for comparing different types of disease‑related costs from a societal perspective, such as health care spending, production losses, and disease burden in terms of life years lost and reduced health‑related quality of life.
This presentation will report results from a comprehensive analysis of health care spending, production losses, and disease burden in Switzerland between 2012 and 2022, and will highlight opportunities for future research.
Michael Stucki is a health economist at the Winterthur Institute of Health Economics at the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences. He studied economics at the University of Bern and holds a PhD in Health Sciences from the University of Lucerne. His research focuses on health economic research in Switzerland, with a focus on cost-of-illness studies, health care spending drivers analyses, and health services research.
